âFor fuckâs sake! Move already, you piece of shit.â I huffed to my suitcase as the wheel caught on a rip in the carpet.
Relief elicited a sigh from my body when I reached the familiar door. Letting go of the handle of my case, I fished into my jacket to retrieve the key and slid it into the lock. However, it refused to turn.
âAre you kidding me?â I said to no one in particular. âI do not have time for this!â The side of my fist slammed against the door, and I turned to press my forehead to the parallel wall. Leaning against it, I groaned before the loud click of a bolt from behind me seized my attention. I spun around to see an unfamiliar woman standing in the doorway of my flat.
Jutting out a hip, she crossed her arms. âYou know, I donât appreciate people trying to break into my home when Iâm just getting into bed.â
âYour home?â I echoed in disbelief. âThis is my home! What the hell are you doing in my home? And why doesnât my key work?â
She glanced at the key in my hand. âAh. You must be Hunter.â
My eyes narrowed. âMaybe I am, maybe Iâm not. Who are you?â
Unfazed at my scrutiny, she sucked on her teeth with indifference. âCharlie. Iâd say itâs a pleasure to meet you, but in these circumstances, I donât really think thatâs true, is it?â
She was brave; Iâll give her that. âHow do you know who I am, Charlie?â
Without a word, she returned to my flat and left the door open. Assuming it was an invitation to come in, I was about to step inside when she emerged once more with an envelope in her hand. âI was told to give you this if you ever showed up here again.â
Frowning, I snatched the envelope from her. âSomeone sold you the flat? Just gave it away?â
Flicking her brunette hair over her shoulder, she shrugged. âI guess. Well if thatâs all, Iâm gonna go to bed now. Nice talking to you, Hunter. Just a tip for the future though, donât break into peopleâs houses as a first impression next time, yeah?â
The door closed. I wasted no time ripping the seal and unfolding the letter inside. My heart sank.
You honestly think Iâd still pay for your flat after you side with Loverboy?
-Boss
P.S. Here is your paperwork just in case you change your mind. Thereâs still time.
Sure enough, my files regarding Harlenâs assassination had been removed from my folder and were tucked into the envelope.
I wouldnât allow myself to panic. I wouldnât allow myself to think about the fact that Boss, or one of his workers had broken into my flat and searched it. Theyâd clearly changed the locks too, hence why my key wasnât working. Just donât think about it, Hunter.
Exiting the building, my thumb scrolled down on my phone. Darkness was beginning to settle, and I needed to find a place to stay soon, but no one in my contacts seemed appropriate.
